LaChapelle reportedly filed the lawsuit Monday in New York's U.S. District Court, alleging the video is a copyright infringement of eight of his "original photographs."

The suit claims the video "obviously copied" LaChapelle's "composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colors, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting."

LaChapelle is seeking at least $1 million in damages from Rihanna and her record label, Island Def Jam.

The photographer has a working history with Rihanna, having shot her MTV ad in 2007. He has also directed some of her previous music videos.

"I really like Riri — this is not personal, strictly business," LaChapelle told CNN. "Musicians commonly pay to sample music or use someone's beats and there should be no difference when 'sampling' artist's visuals."
