NEW ORLEANS, La. — Britney Spears hit the stage for the first time in five years Tuesday night, kicking off her highly-anticipated "Circus" concert tour in her home state of Louisiana.

The 27-year-old pop star delighted her adoring fans at the New Orleans Arena with a 16-song performance that lasted around 90 minutes.

The circus-themed extravaganza featured clowns, acrobats and jugglers, with Spears opening the gig with the title track of her new album, "Circus."

Not everyone was impressed with Spears' return to the stage, with People critic Chuck Arnold saying she "never really hit her old stride."

"There was a decided lack of joy in her performance, which felt labored at times," said Arnold.
