NEW YORK — Justin Bieber's manager was arrested Wednesday over a fan frenzy that took place last year at a Long Island mall, the Associated Press reports.
Scott "Scooter" Braun surrendered to Nassau County police and is currently awaiting arraignment on charges of reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance. His lawyer said he will plead not guilty.
Braun's arrest stems from an incident that took place in November when Bieber was scheduled to appear at the Roosevelt Field Mall. Police canceled the scheduled appearance when the crowd of 3,000 became unruly and asked Braun to notify Bieber's fans via Twitter that the event was off. However, authorities say he failed to do so in a timely manner.
Five people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries after the police attempted to control the crowd.
"Mr. Braun put his own selfish desire for publicity above public safety and endangered the very fans who came to see his client, as well as innocent bystanders who were at the mall that day," Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice said in a statement to Access Hollywood. "By refusing to send out the cancellation Tweet and preventing others from doing so, he blatantly ignored police directives and put thousands of innocent people in harm's way. It was only through the fast and efficient work of the police department that a horrible disaster was averted."
Braun, 28, faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
"You've got my total support" Bieber tweeted on Wednesday. "Wish you were here in Chicago with us."
