If you’re looking for candid, look no further than the October 2014 issue of Elle UK, featuring a flawless Jennifer Lopez.

In the issue, on newsstands Thursday, J. Lo opens up about everything from motherhood to love.

“It’s not easy,” the 45-year-old entertainer tells the magazine about being a single parent to 5-year-old twins Max and Emme. “I’m from a traditional background. It takes two people to make a kid for a reason. It’s tough because I know they feel the void of that male presence.

Lopez and her children’s father Marc Anthonyfinalized their divorce in June after splitting in 2011.

“When Marc and I first broke up, I did think, ‘I wish I could have held this together,’” she adds. “But when you realize it’s not the right thing for anybody, you think ‘OK well how do we make this work, how do we make this better, how do we make this great for the children anyway?’”

Lopez and her most recent beau Casper Smartbroke up earlier this year after dating for three years. While the “Booty” singer is currently single, her outlook on love remains positive.

“Each time it goes wrong it’s hard,” she tells Elle UK. “I get really hurt but I have to let myself go, ‘What did I do? What can I learn?’ And as hard and hurtful as things get, I want to believe I will be able to go one step higher. I’ve got hope that if I keep going I will eventually get it right. I still believe in love. The nirvana man, he’s out there somewhere. But you just have to work at it. You have to work at everything.”
