LAS VEGAS, Nev. — One week after Scottish singer Susan Boyle took YouTube by storm, the video site is blazing with what else but a clip from Sunday's Miss USA pageant.
At the center of attention is what Miss California's Carrie Prejean said when quizzed by celebrity blogger and gay-rights advocate Perez Hilton.
"Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage," said Hilton. "Do you think every state should follow suit, why or why not?"
"We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," responded Prejean. "And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
On Monday, the 21-year-old Prejean spoke with pageant co-host Billy Bush on "The Billy Bush Show," where she admitted that her response ruined her chances of winning the Miss USA title.
"It did cost me my crown," said Prejean, who finished as the runner-up to Miss North Carolina, Kristen Dalton. "I wouldn't have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that's all I can do."
Hilton himself admitted that Prejean's response was costly in the end.
"The way miss California answered her question lost her the crown, without a doubt!" he told Access Hollywood. "Never before that I'm aware of has a contestant been booed at Miss USA."
