NEW YORK — The MTV Video Music Awards kicked off Sunday with a poignant, tender tribute to fallen icon Michael Jackson.
Madonna opened the show with an emotional and heartfelt tribute to Jackson, who died on June 25 at the age of 50.
"Most of us had turned our backs on him," she said in her speech. "He was so unique, so original, so rare and there will never be anyone like him again. He was the king."
Janet Jackson would later take the stage, where she was joined by her brother's tour dancers as they recreated some of the King of Pop's most memorable music videos, including "Thriller," "Bad," "Smooth Criminal" and "Scream."

My heart goes out to the Jackson family. I'm sure that was a tough performance to do without her brother physically being there. Just side note: Did anyone notice Chris Judd (JLo's ex-huband) as one of her backup dancers? and PDiddy got on stage also...must be weird to have them all in one roof

that is so hard to watch at the end When Janet almost crys and bows twice, but you can see how bad she wants to Cry cuz Her Big Brother aint there with her like he was in that picture in the background of SCREAM! I love Janet and I love Michael!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THAT. I get SO TIRED of so-called Christian people making the most HATEFUL comments toward other people. I thought God wanted us to love one another and treat each other kindly. And from what I have read the boy that claimed Michael hurt him, admitted that he was lying about it at the orders of his father. And I don't know about other people, but I HAVE A CHILD and people are always saying that he was guilty because he settled. Let me tell you something, if someone hurt MY CHILD, there would be NO AMOUNT OF MONEY someone could offer me to make me stay off their ass for hurting my child, so that is when u have to start wondering if it is true and I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT MICHAEL HURT ANYONE!!!! I am a Christian woman and have been for most of my life, let me just say that you are not God and have NO RIGHT to pass judgment on another person's soul that way. If he was NEVER a believer and cried out to GOD right at the last minute he is then saved through the blood of Jesus Christ. Were you there? Do you know what his last minutes on earth were like? Then please don't speak on his soul. You make Christians look bad, this is why it's sooo hard to win souls for Christ because we as Christians are the most judgmental people of all! I do believe that to be a child of God you have to believe in the son of God, Jesus Christ, as the savior of your soul. No matter what we believe we should never voice our opinion in such a tasteless manner. God covers all sin , NOT YOU!!!
