HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — James Gandolfini is joining Jesse L. Martin in "Sexual Healing," an indie film that chronicles the last years of singer Marvin Gaye's life.
The film follows the life of Gaye, played by Martin, from his parting with Motown to his self-imposed exile in Europe. Gandolfini will play the role of Freddy Cousaert, the promoter behind the singer's biggest-selling album, "Midnight Love."
The film, which is being produced by Gandolfini's company, Attaboy Films, is loosely based on Steven Turner's book "Trouble Man."
Shooting is slated to begin on April 15 in locations including Ostend, Belgium, Massachusetts, and Los Angeles.
Gandolfini is currently filming Spike Lee's "Miracle at St. Anna." On Sunday, the 46-year-old actor won best actor in a television drama series for "The Sopranos" at the Screen Actor Guilds Awards. The HBO series ended its run last June after six seasons.
Martin is best known for his roles of Tom Collins in the Tony Award-winning musical "Rent" and Detective Ed Green on the NBC television series "Law & Order."
