'Dear John' Dethrones 'Avatar' at Box Office

Dear JohnHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — It took a tear-jerker to finally knock off James Cameron's sci-fi mania at the box office.

Dear John, a love story starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, debuted as the No. 1 movie over the weekend with $32.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates released Sunday. The strong opening knocked Avatar from the top spot, a position Cameron's epic had held for seven straight weeks.

Dear John's total was also a record opening for Super Bowl weekend, topping the $31.1 million debut for 2008's Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.

Carrie Underwood Lands First Movie Role in 'Soul Surfer'

The 26-year-old country star has landed her first movie role in Soul Surfer, the true-life story of surfing champion Bethany Hamilton, who defied all odds after having her left arm bit off by a shark at age 13.

Underwood will portray Sarah Hill, a youth counselor at Hamilton's church.

The movie also stars AnnaSophia Robb as Bethany Hamilton, Helen Hunt as Bethany's mother Cheri and Dennis Quaid as Bethany's father Tom.

'Avatar,' 'The Hurt Locker' Lead Academy Award Nominations

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Get ready for the battle of the exes.

James Cameron's Avatar and Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker each racked up nine nominations to lead the field of contenders for the upcoming Academy Awards, organizers announced Tuesday.

The former spouses will go head-to-head in both the best picture and best director categories. They'll face a crowded field for best picture, which features 10 contenders instead of the usual five for the first time since 1943. The extended category also includes An Education, The Blind Side, District 9, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Hurt Locker, an indie drama about an American bomb-disposal unit in Iraq, won best picture on Friday at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, an event that has an uncanny knack for predicting Oscar success.

The low-budget film also earned best director honors for Kathryn Bigelow, who defeated her ex-husband, James Cameron, in the process. It was one of the few setbacks for Cameron, whose sci-fi epic Avatar scooped up six wins, including best action movie.

'Avatar' Tops Weekend Box Office Yet Again

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar won the weekend box office for the fourth straight week, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The picture easily outdistanced the competition with $48.5 million million in sales. It also raised its worldwide gross to $1.34 billion, a mark topped only by Cameron's blockbuster epic Titanic.

The top three box office draws remained unchanged from the previous weekend as Sherlock Holmes finished second at $16.6 million and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel came in third at $16.3 million.
