U.S. District Judge Richard Berman warned Cameron Douglas, 31, that this was his "last chance to make it" at the sentencing. The actor's son said he has been sober since being sent to prison in August, his longest drug-free stint since his teenage years.

"I'd like to apologize to my family and my loved ones for putting them through this nightmare of my making," Douglas told the court.

The judge said he had read at least 37 letters expressing support for the troubled Douglas, including ones from his grandfather, Kirk, stepmother Catherine Zeta-Jones and NBA executive Pat Riley.

"I think this case and this sentencing may well be his last chance to make it," warned Berman.

Douglas could have faced a minimum of 10 years in prison had the judge not handed down a lesser sentence.

The former deejay was arrested last July on a methamphetamine-dealing charge at the posh Hotel Gansevoort in Manhattan. Prosecutors contended that he was the middleman in a scheme to smuggle large amounts of meth from California to New York, sometimes using overnight mail.

Douglas has appeared briefly on the big screen, including 2003's It Runs in the Family, in which he starred alongside his famous father and grandfather.

His father and mother, Diandra Douglas, divorced in 2000 after 23 years of marriage.
