Obsessions of the Week: Lady Gaga, ‘House of Cards,’ Carly Rae Jepsen, ‘Empire,’ and More

By Celebrity News Wire on March 4, 2015

Like you, the editors of Celebuzz love pop culture. Maybe too much. While we take pride in bringing you the day’s news and gossip, we also have ~*~thoughts and opinions and passions~*~, and we’re going to share those with you, our dear readers.

Each Wednesday, we’ll tell you what we’re loving this week and Agree, disagree, or maybe find something new for you to check out. You can’t lose. Without further ado, here are the things we’re loving this week.

Lady Gaga’s “Till It Happens to You”

A low-quality leak of the anthem (written with Diane Warren) from The Hunting Ground, a documentary about campus rape, hit the internet earlier this week, and it sounds gorgeous and bone-chillingly powerful. – Matt

House of Cards.

Despite the fact that the new season is a little boring, I’ve missed House of Cards so much and binge-watched almost the entire season this week. Frank Underwood hasn’t been as much as a demon as he was in the past (I guess being the President changes you), but there’s still enough mystery and drama to keep me watching. – Kendall

Broad City Keyboard App

After weeks of denial, I finally updated my iPhone to the latest iOS 8 simply because I wanted to download the Broad City keyboard app. My life has never been the same folks, and it’s all thanks to the pug emoji. Or maybe Judith Light the dog. Bazinga. – Peggy

The Fact That Shamrock Shake Is Back at McDonald’s

Just like how basics ~*~literally die~*~ over Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Latte, I thirst for McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. It’s only available during the magical time between late February and mid-March, making our annual reunion always a short-lived affair. Parting with my shake is always such sweet sorrow — sweet, minty sorrow. – Gabi

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst

Think of this show as a TV version of the Serial podcast. The HBO docuseries. The six-part documentary from Andrew Jarecki and Marc Smerling features interviews with New York City real estate heir Robert Durst, who was suspected (and acquitted in one case) of three murders. He’s creepy, but so absorbing. You want to here how he tries to explain away all the facts. – Michael

Björk

Following the leak and subsequent early release of her excellent new album, Vulnicura, the Queen of Avant Garde Pop begins her tour with a series of shows in New York City. I’m attending the first of these shows on March 7, and I couldn’t be more excited. Bonus: a retrospective of her career begins at the Museum of Modern Art the same day. - Matt

This Deconstruction of the House of Cards Theme Song

House of Cards fans should be familiar with the powerful trumpet that opens each episode. (If you’ve only binge-watched the series, maybe you’ve mastered the art of skipping to the first second of the first scene). In an old podcast brought back to life by the folks at the Creators Project, composer Jeff Beal breaks down the science behind the theme song and reveals wonderful things like the power of Supertramp. Just picture Frank Underwood’s tapping finger while you’re listening to Beal’s words. -Peggy

The Last Man on Earth

As I’ve previously mentioned, I’m a huge fan of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. So for obvious reasons, I’m naturally inclined to sing praises about FOX’s The Last Man on Earth, which is produced by writing duo and starring the equally funny Will Forte. What can I say? I’m sucker for dark comedy. - Gabi

Carly Rae Jepsen’s Comeback (?) Song

Say and judge all you want, but I really like “I Really Like You.” And I really can’t wait for the music video. (Why is Tom Hanks in it?) – Peggy

Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon on Empire

The breakout star of this TV season is definitely Taraji P. Henson’s Empire character, Cookie Lyon. Henson gives a star-making performance (she’s been around for years, but this is the role of a lifetime) as the tough-talking but loving mother and music manager. Her Cookie Lyon is part Lady Macbeth and part Joan Collins. That makes her the last person on Earth you want mad at you. – Michael

Brand New (Finally) Reissuing Deja Entendu on Vinyl

Call me a pretentious hipster or an emo kid perpetually living in 2003, but this is really exciting news for someone who has been waiting over a decade for Deja Entendu to be released on vinyl again. Seeing how the original pressings are currently being sold off on eBay for $550, it’s nice to know that it’ll no longer cost an arm and a leg — or a down payment on an apartment — to own a piece of pop-punk history. And yes, I’m also gunning to be front row when Brand New plays Coachella this April. See you in the pit. – Gabi

March Nail Polish

I’m addicted to manicures, and March is the month that it’s finally acceptable to start wearing lighter and brighter nail polishes again. While I love me a good black or deep-maroon hue, after a while it gets old. I can’t wait to start rocking mint green, baby pink and bright white manicures again — just in time for spring! – Kendall

Purity Ring’s Another Eternity

The Canadian duo just released a new album, their second, and I am excited to acquaint myself with it further. - Matt

Big Sean, Drake, and Kanye West’s “Blessings” Video

Big Sean, Drake and Kanye West are my top three favorite rappers right now, so when all of them came together for this song, I lost my mind for a second. Not to mention, it’s not one of those collaborations that was forced and finished with basic lyrics (cough cough Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J). Each rapper delivers a great verse and the video definitely pumps me up. – Kendall
