Hilary Duff: formerly an underaged partygoer, currently a blue-green-haired mermaid goddess, TV Land actress (rebranding for a new aka Younger audience) and cool Williamsburg hipster mother. Duff has certainly come a long way since her days playing Lizzie McGuire on the Disney channel.
Yes, the former Disney star is now a 27-year-old soon-to-be divorced single mom (she filed for divorce from estranged husband Mike Comrie just over a month ago), but that’s not actually the main, or most important (because it’s not) reason Duff has been in the news as of late.
When she’s not confronting her ex Aaron Carter‘s public thirst for her, Duff has been opening up about her teenage self in more ways than we’d like to know, but it’s also oddly refreshing and shines a very likeable light upon her.
She’s already admitted to (probably?) losing her virginity to Good Charlotte frontman (and Nicole Richie‘s now-husband) Joel Madden. She dated him as a teenager while he was 26. And she’s further tarnished her younger self’s innocent, squeaky-clean image by confessing she used to do “naughty, naughty” things like sneak into clubs by lying about her age.
Now starring on TV Land’s new show Younger, it seems like Duff might be catering to a, well, older audience. But just because her show’s on TV Land, that doesn’t necessarily mean her audience won’t be younger. For example, she told TIME, “It’s hard to target who will be watching our show because I really think it will be quite broad. Younger is edgy. It’s dealing with a lot of women’s issues in humorous ways.”
“Edgy,” as in “We get drunk a lot. We take Molly.”
Sounds fun.
On living in Brooklyn with all the cool kids, she expressed to TIME,
I felt so old living there, to be honest. I lived in Park Slope, which I love, and that’s not where too many of the cool kids live — it’s a very normal family neighborhood. But we shot in Williamsburg, and some of the outfits were so wild. I couldn’t wrap my head around it…There’s such good people-watching. People are really nice and normal, but they’re living how they want. I respect that, but it makes me feel old for sure.
Rest assured, she does other very “Brooklyn” things like drink water out of mason jars and make her own pickles; she did live in L.A., another hub for the Pinterest-aesthetic!
Duff’s career is seemingly on the rise once again, with the revitalization of her acting career and her music career as well (she’s finished recording her next album!). For these reasons, Duff has the honor of being this week’s Instant Follow Friday. Obviously an avid dog lover, Duff posts the cutest pics of her baby French Bulldog Beau and of her Bermese Mountain dog, Dubois.
Other things she likes: yolo-ing with blue-green hair, No Nonsense socks, her family (of course sis Haylie Duff), overalls, and her one and only, 3-year-old Luca. Duff’s son Luca is super adorable, and her love and affection for him is undeniably beautiful. She recently reunited with her ex Comrie for his third birthday party and it looked like a fun-filled and loving affair.
It’s nice to see that her and Comrie have not only a cordial relationship, but that Duff sees the big picture (as she explained to Cosmopolitan, “I don’t want to sound bitter because I’m definitely not, but I don’t know if people are meant to be together forever. Things happen over a long relationship that you can’t always fight. A marriage of 20 years, the accomplishment of that must feel really great, but there are also huge sacrifices. I just always want to fight for happiness.”).
Good on Hilary for staying positive, and for accomplishing so much in the past year.
