Beyoncé graces the cover of Time magazine’s annual 100 Most Influential People Issue this year, and Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg explains why The Queen still reigns supreme.
Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, says Bey should be admired for “[raising] her voice both on- and offstage to urge women to be independent and lead.” In fact, Beyoncé has recently raised the question (and controversy) of feminism in popular culture. While many have praised the “Blow” singer for owning her sexuality and embracing its power, others have criticized her for “leveraging sexuality to get ahead.”
Regardless, one can’t ignore the power of sales.
Bey’s self-titled fifth studio album was released in December 2013, with no prior announcement. The debut sparked a near hysterical fan response, and it became the fastest-selling album in iTunes history.
Other celebs who made this year’s influential list include, Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, openly gay NBA player Jason Collins and Scandal star Kerry Washington.
