Lil Wayne, Coldplay Lead 2009 Grammy Award Nominations

By Rich King on December 4, 2008

LOS ANGELES — Rapper Lil Wayne racked up eight nominations to lead the field of nominees for the 2009 Grammy Awards announced Wednesday in a first-time event held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.

Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, outlasted the field behind his top-selling album, "Tha Carter III." Among the New Orleans rapper's nominations are the coveted album of the year award.

British rockers Coldplay followed close behind with seven nominations. The band's latest album, "Viva La Vida," will also compete for album of the year honors, along with Radiohead's "In Rainbows," Ne-Yo's "Year of the Gentleman," and Robert Plant's collaboration with Alison Krauss, "Raising Sand."

The title track of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" will also compete for record of the year, squaring off against Robert Plant and Alison Krauss ("Please Read the Letter"), Leona Lewis ("Bleeding Love"),  M.I.A ("Paper Planes"), and British singer Adele ("Chasing Pavement").

The pop-rock trio Jonas Brothers were among the best new artist nominees, along with Adele and fellow British star Duffy.  Country group Lady Antebellum and R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan will also compete for the prize.

R&B singer Ne-Yo, as well as rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z, each scored six nominations to finish just behind Lil Wayne and Coldplay for most nods.

For the first time ever, the Grammy nominees were announced on primetime television as part of a special concert that featured performances by Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and John Mayer.

The 51st Grammy Awards will take place on Feb. 8 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
