HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Actress Christina Applegate has been diagnosed with breast cancer, her rep confirmed in a statement released Saturday.
"Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening," said the 36-year-old's star rep. "Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. No further statement will be issued at this time."
Applegate's mother is a breast cancer survivor. In a 2003 interview with USA Today, she revealed her mother was diagnosed with the disease when she was just a little girl.
"It was devastating for my mother to lose one of her breasts and have to go through all that," she told the paper. "It is a very personal cancer for the women it affects. This is about women's womanhood. It's one of the aspects of our femininity."
Applegate, who first rose to fame as Kelly Bundy on the long-running Fox sitcom "Married ... with Children," is up for an Emmy this year for her starring role on ABC's "Samantha Who?"
It has been a difficult stretch for Applegate. Last month, her close friend and ex-boyfriend, Lee Grivas, was found dead in his Hollywood apartment from a reported drug overdose.
On Sept. 5, Applegate is scheduled to participate in the Stand Up to Cancer telethon, where she will be joined by such A-list stars as Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Aniston, Forest Whitaker, Scarlett Johansson and Charlize Theron. The telethon will be simultaneously broadcast on CBS, NBC and ABC.
