Britney Spears Pulls Off Clean Sweep at MTV Video Music Awards

By Rich King on September 7, 2008

Britney SpearsHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — What a difference a year makes.

Britney Spears got her redemption, pulling off a clean sweep by winning all three categories that she was nominated for at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards.

Sporting a silver Versace minidress, Spears kicked off the show by announcing: "I'm here tonight to celebrate a very important birthday. This is the 25th Video Music Awards — and it starts right now."

The rest of the evening would prove to be magical for the 26-year-old pop star as she won the first three VMAs of her career, including the night's top prize, video of the year for her single "Piece of Me." The track also won for best pop video and best female video.

"I'm in shock right now," she told the crowd upon accepting video of the year honors.

Spears, who seems to have put her rocky 2007 behind her, opened last year's ceremony with a performance of "Gimme More" that drew plenty of criticism.

Other notable "Moonman" winners last night included Chris Brown, who won best male video for "With You." Linkin Park's "Shadow of the Day" won for best rock video, while rapper Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" captured best hip-hop video honors.

The VMA ceremony was hosted by British comedian Russell Brand, who ruffled a few feathers by poking fun at the virginity pledge taken by the Jonas Brothers. Jordin Sparks later came to the hit teen band's defense, telling the audience, "It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not every guy or girl wants to be a slut."
