LONDON — Amy Winehouse says her well-publicized problems can be traced to her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, being sent away to jail.
"To be honest, my husband's away, I'm bored, I'm young," the 24-year-old singer tells Rolling Stone magazine. "I felt like there was nothing to live for. It's just been a low ebb."
So bored that Winehouse has invited the writer into her London home at 4 a.m., several hours after they had camped outside hoping for an interview.
"We are so in love, we are a team," Winehouse says of Fielder-Civil, whom she met in 2003 at a bar. "Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake."
Winehouse's run of tabloid frenzy started hitting an all-time high last November, when Fielder-Civil, whom she married in May 2007, was arrested for assaulting a bar owner.
The singer's most recent tabloid topic was a hospitalization last month, which led to reports that the Grammy winner had been diagnosed with symptoms of emphysema. Still, she apparently hasn't come close to hitting rock bottom, as her late-night eating habits would suggest.
"I'm on a strict pizza diet," says Winehouse, who instead opts for a banana sandwich sprinkled with potato chips. "I'm on a strict put-weight-on diet. I love food. I'm just stressed out."
With her friend, fellow British singer Remi Nicole by her side, Winehouse decides to share some of her wedding photos. She then explains that all of the chaos in her life is nothing out of the ordinary.
"I've never been to rehab, I mean, done it properly," she shares. "I'm young, and I'm in love, and I get my nuts off sometimes. But it's never been like, 'Amy, get your life together. ' "
In the midst of the chaotic scene surrounding her home, Winehouse reveals that she's begun work on her follow-up to "Back to Black," which garnered five wins at the Grammy Awards earlier this year. Winehouse says her new material will be the "same stuff as my last album but with some ska."
She'll most likely be carrying on without her "Back to Black" producer, Mark Ronson, whom she says made a "snap judgement" and bailed out on her in May.
"We are close enough that I thought we could be like, 'Hello, darling, it's me,' " she says of the rift.
Winehouse says they last spent a few days together at an Oxford studio, but it was obvious they were no longer on the same page.
"I played him tracks I liked, just getting the vibe, and he was like, 'Amy, come, let's work.' He was really just uptight," she recalls. "He left after three days, and I was like, 'Breathe a sigh of relief, I'm in the country and I can write.' "
Whether she can achieve the same level of success in the future remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain, Winehouse still has several people rooting for her.
"She's on loads of crack, but you can see through that," a member of the paparazzi tells the magazine. "I just want for her to get better. I'm hoping someday for that set of pictures of her riding her bike in the park or something healthy."
