Julianne Hough's DWTS Photo Diary: Week 10 Was All About the Vintage Appeal

By Celebrity News Wire on November 18, 2014

Dancing With the Stars judge Julianne Hough returned to a favorite designer — and a go-to hue — for her elegant 1930s-inspired gown during this week’s episode.

Hough returned to a favorite designer, Jenny Packham (who apparently doesn’t hold this incident against her!) for her elegant beaded gown. “Jenny Packham is one of my ‘go to’ designers. It’s very rare I try on one of her dresses without falling in love with it,” Hough tells PEOPLE. “This whole look has a very Ginger Rogers 1930s vibe, with our own modern twist. We ‘blinged’ it out a little with these simple and elegant Aspiri diamond studs.”

Styling advice came courtesy of Anita Patrickson, who says she was excited to contrast Hough’s “strong sleek looks” of late with a much girlier look. “It made me want to see Fred Astaire twirl Julianne around under a starry sky!” she says. “Jules loved it … The green is so gorgeous with her coloring and of course the fabulous shoulders are the perfect focal point for sitting at the judges’ panel!”

Patrickson points out that it can be challenging to keep a look fashion-forward with a face like Hough’s: “Julianne is a really insanely beautiful girl and sometime the prettier you are the easier it is to loose the fashion-y side,” she says. So hairstylist Riawna Capri and makeup artist Spencer Barnes made sure to keep her beauty look romantic without being too soft to keep everything focused.

“I love braiding hair, then deconstructing it to create a more effortless vibe,” says Capri. “Pulling apart the braid to make it look fat is my favorite part!” And when Barnes could get to her in between puppy smooches (she had a guest Labrador this week in addition to her trailer fixtures, Lexi and Harley), he gave her a “effortless, romantic and classy” look with the help of Kevyn Aucoin’s “The Celestial Skin Liquid Lighting” in “Candlelight” and peachy lips and cheeks. “She was super happy with the look — she exclaimed ‘This is like wedding makeup!’” he tells PEOPLE, adding of his client’s getting-ready hijinks “Julianne had us laughing and entertained when she started dancing around the hair and makeup trailer as she fringe whipped us with her fantastic Tommy Hilfiger fringed poncho dress. I tell you, Julianne is pure sunshine!
