Alex Rodriguez may be a nice guy, but the mother of his former girlfriend, Silicon Valley CEO Anne Wojcicki, said the baseball star wasn’t “intellectual” enough for her daughter.
Esther Wojcicki didn’t hold back about the man her daughter, the co-founder and CEO of the genetics mail-order testing firm 23andMe, dated for about a year and a half in a new interview with The New York Times.
“I liked A-Rod, he was a very nice man,” Esther — who is a teacher and journalist — said in a profile on Anne published on Saturday. “He came from a Hispanic family. We liked them, they were very sweet. He seemed to be genuinely in love with Anne. But I right away figured out this was a mismatch.”
“He had no academic background. We couldn’t have an intellectual conversation about anything,” she continued. “His main interest in life was something that none of us had ever focused on, which was baseball. He could park himself in front of a TV and watch baseball for 10 hours a day. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to go on the yacht with Anne because the TV might not be working.”
When Anne first told her mother about her new romance, Esther wasn’t familiar with the former Yankees slugger.
“When I started dating Alex,” Anne said. “My mom was like, ‘What’s an A-Rod?’ I was like, ‘Mom, that’s his name.’ ”

Esther said that Rodriguez’s current girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez, may be a better match for him because they’re both used to the attention that comes with fame.
“We couldn’t go anywhere with him,” Esther told the outlet. “If we went to Target to look for clothes for the kids, all of a sudden we’d be looking around and people would be saying, ‘We just want a selfie with A-Rod.’ He can’t walk across Central Park. He has to take a cab. That will work better with J-Lo because she’s like, ‘Take a picture of me anytime.’ ”
Anne’s mother added, “I wish J. Lo all the luck in the world.”
From ice cream outings with their children, to some PDA on Lopez’s set, the love birds haven’t been able to get enough of each other since they began dating earlier this year.
J-Rod also just appeared in a sultry Vanity Fair cover story for the magazine’s December issue and nearly broke the internet with their striking couple photos.
Earlier this month, sources confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE that the lovebirds are planning to move in together.
The Shades of Blue actor recently listed her N.Y.C. home for $27 million, and the stars “looking for an apartment together for the whole family,” a source close to Lopez said.
Since they began dating in February, the entertainer and former athlete have worked to merge their families together — including Lopez’s 9-year-old twins Max and Emme and Rodriguez’s daughters, Natasha, 12, and Ella, 9.
“They will invest together in a new home when they find the perfect one,” the source added. “They are starting to make more financial decisions together. It’s nice for Jennifer to be with a man who has his own money and spends it wisely.”
