By Rich King on December 15, 2009

LOS ANGELES — George Clooney's Up in the Air racked up six nominations, including best drama, to lead the field of contenders for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards, organizers announced Tuesday.

The film's nominations also included acting honors for Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick, while Jason Reitman earned a best director nod.

In the best drama category, Up in the Air will compete against Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds and Precious.

The musical Nine was second with five Golden Globe nominations, including best musical or comedy and acting nominations for stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard.

Also competing for best musical or comedy are (500) Days of Summer, The Hangover, It's Complicated and Julie & Julia.

In the best actor in a motion picture drama category, Clooney will face off against Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus) and Tobey Maguire (Brothers).

On the best dramatic actress side, the field features Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious).

Nominations for best actor in a motion picture comedy or musical went to Day-Lewis (Nine), Matt Damon (The Informant), Robert Downey, Jr. (Sherlock Holmes), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer) and Michael Stuhlbard (A Serious Man).

Bullock also picked up a nomination for best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical for The Proposal. She will compete against Cotillard (Nine), Julia Roberts (Duplicity) and Meryl Streep, who will essentially compete against herself after earning nods for both It's Complicated and Julie & Julia.

On the television side, the nominees for best drama series are Big Love, Dexter, House, Mad Men and True Blood.

The nominations for musical or comedy series went to 30 Rock, Entourage, Glee, Modern Family and The Office.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual ceremony will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Jan. 17, with British funnyman Ricky Gervais serving as host.
