Kelis Files for Divorce From Nas

By Chloe Bunker on May 1, 2009

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Music star Kelis has filed for divorced from rapper Nas, despite being seven months pregnant with the couple's son.

"I can confirm that she has filed for divorce," a rep for the "Milkshake" singer told Vibe. "We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time."

An attorney for Kelis filed the divorce papers Thursday afternoon, citing irreconcilable differences, according to the publication.

Kelis, 29, and Nas, 35, met in 2002 at an MTV Video Music Awards after-party thrown by Sean "Diddy" Combs. They tied the knot three years later in Atlanta.

While this is the couple's first child together, Nas has a 15-year-old daughter named Destiny from a previous relationship. After learning he had a second child on the way, the "Hip Hop Is Dead" singer expressed his enthusiasm to MTV.

"Yeah, man, I find out what it's gonna be next week, so I'm happy," he said.

Patrick Swayze Responds to Near Death Report, Says He's 'One of the Lucky Ones'

By Rich King on March 11, 2009

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Patrick Swayze is firing back at a tabloid cover story that suggests he's near death.

Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer, appears gaunt alongside the words "the end" in the latest issue of the National Enquirer. However, the 56-year-old actor told People on Wednesday that he considers himself "one of the lucky ones."

"It's amazing to me that the tabloids such as the National Enquirer print such negative stories about me and my health when there are so many positive things going on in my life right now," Swayze said in a statement. "I've started a new chemotherapy and, once again, I am one of the lucky ones with pancreatic cancer that is responding well to the treatment.

"There is a brand new, 12-week-old, Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy named Kumasai in my life who is gorgeous and already showing that he will be one special dog.

"I am starting work on my new book, in addition to enjoying the fantastic response from everyone on my A&E series 'The Beast.'

"I hope in the future, the press will think twice about printing inaccuracies and painting an unpleasant picture when I have so much to be thankful for at this time."

Swayze was hospitalized in January with a case of pneumonia. In an interview with ABC's Barbara Walters that aired just prior to his hospitalization, the "Ghost" star admitted that he's been "going through hell" since being diagnosed with the disease in January 2008.

"There's a lot of fear here," he said. "There's a lot of stuff going on. Yeah, I'm scared. Yeah, I'm angry. Yeah, I'm [asking] why me. Yeah, I'm all this stuff."

Swayze told Walters that "the outpouring of love" from fans all across the world "has constantly astounded" him. The Texas native also said he thinks more about the afterlife now.

"I don't know what's on the other side," he told Walters. "It tests everything I believe in … that here is something unique in all of us that does not, does not die."

"I'm trying to shut up and let my angels speak to me and, and tell me what I'm supposed to do," he added.

Chris Brown Withdraws Name From Kids' Choice Awards

By Rich King on March 11, 2009

LOS ANGELES — R&B star Chris Brown has withdrawn his name from the ballot for the upcoming Kids' Choice Awards.

The 19-year-old singer released a statement Wednesday thanking his fans for nominating him for the March 28 awards show on Nickelodeon. However, Brown said the controversy surrounding his Feb. 8 arrest for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna made this the right decision.

"Chris very much appreciates the support of his fans and the honor they have paid him in the way of nominations for Favorite Male Singer and Favorite Song," read the statement, according to People. "Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among those nominated. While Chris would like to speak to his fans directly about this and other issues, pending legal proceedings preclude his doing so at this time. Once the matter before him has been resolved, he intends to do so."

An online petition has been circulating to take Brown's name off the ballot, but Nickelodeon said yesterday that the singer would not be removed.

Following Brown's withdrawal, Nickelodeon said it would "respect" his decision.

"We agree with and respect his decision, and are looking forward to presenting a great event for our audience," the network said.

Diddy Sheds Light on Offering Home to Chris Brown and Rihanna

By Chloe Bunker on March 10, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Diddy says he was simply helping his friends when he offered up his Star Island home to Rihanna and Chris Brown, just weeks after the couple got into a fight that led to Brown's arrest.

"It's a dark time for them and I was there more as a supporter," the 39-year-old Diddy told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show Tuesday.

The music mogul went on the defense when DeGeneres questioned his decision to allow the pair into his home, with Brown currently facing two felony charges for his alleged assault of Rihanna on Feb. 8.

"I know both of them," said Diddy, "and I'm allowed to give my house to whoever I want to give my house to."

"I don't cast a stone or cast a judgment on anybody," he continued. "If a friend or friends ask me for a favor, then I'm going to be there for a favor as long as I know that the energy of the favor is positive for two people to sit down and talk about a situation that they're in."

Diddy said he stayed away from "getting involved" in the couple's situation, saying he was simply trying to "be there as a friend during hard times."

After listening to the reasoning behind Diddy's decision, DeGeneres said she feared a message being sent to girls that it's ok to take back someone who has hit them.

"I don't think that's it's right for anybody to hit anybody," responded Diddy, who then said that "we all have to be honest with ourselves as adults and people that have been in relationships."

"We know sometimes those relationships get ugly and sometimes it doesn't come out into the forefront the way that this one has," he reasoned.

Diddy also said it's important for the public to show their support while refraining from jumping to conclusions.

"There's a lot of stones being thrown and we don't know exactly what's going on," he told DeGeneres. "These are two young individuals. We need to pray for them and we need to do things to support them."

Lauren Conrad Reflects on Leaving 'The Hills'

By Chloe Bunker on March 8, 2009

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — After living her life out on camera for the past five years, Lauren Conrad says enough was enough. Hence her decision to leave MTV's "The Hills" and move on with her life.

"I've spent the last five years making every decision be about the show," the 23-year-old Conrad reveals in the latest issue of Us Weekly. "People I date have to be able to film, the places I work have to let us film and the places I live have to have set lighting."

"I loved doing it and had so much fun, but it came to a point where I had done it long enough," she adds.

MTV's cameras first started rolling on Conrad in 2004 when she was a high school student on "Laguna Beach." The show's success led to the "Hills" spinoff, which debuted two years later.

On Thursday, "Hills" producer" Liz Gately confirmed to The Associated Press that Conrad would be leaving the hit reality show after its upcoming fifth season, which premieres on March 30. While Conrad says her departure is "bittersweet," she is looking forward to what lies ahead.

"You see us on the show and we appear to have seminormal lives, but if you watch any entertainment news show, half of the cast is being swarmed by paparazzi," the fashion designer tells the mag. "I'm excited to go back to having just one life, because there were times that I got them confused."

Chances are quitting the show won't exactly keep Conrad away from the paparazzi, particularly with her blossoming relationship with actor Kyle Howard. She tells Us that dating the "My Boys" star and keeping their romance off "The Hills" was "very difficult."

"When you're with someone, they become a very big part of your life," she says.

Legal Experts Debate Rihanna Testifying Against Chris Brown

By Rich King on March 6, 2009

LOS ANGELES — With Chris Brown facing felony charges stemming from last month's alleged assault of his girlfriend, fellow R&B star Rihanna, many legal experts are weighing in on the case moving forward. Most agree that the prosecutions case will depend on Rihanna's willingness to cooperate.

"So much of [the trial] hinges on the testimony of the victim or her willingness to testify and it'll be interesting to see whether she cooperates with the prosecution or not," Loyola law school professor Stan Goldman told Radar Online. "If she refuses to testify they're probably not going to be able to get in whatever statements she's already made to the police and then they have no case probably."

During a short session Thursday afternoon at Los Angeles Superior Court, the 19-year-old Brown did not enter a plea to the two felony charges against him — assault and making criminal threats. Instead his attorney, Mark Geragos, was granted a continuace until April 6.

If convicted, Brown faces anywhere from probation to a maximum four years and eight months in state prison, prosecutors say.

"The DAs are facing an uphill battle now if Rihanna isn't cooperating," Steve Sitkoff, a Los Angeles defense lawyer and former prosecutor told People. "At this point, her cooperation can make or break the case. But the DAs may not need her if Brown is willing to strike a plea deal."

While prosecutors would likely subpoena the 21-year-old Rihanna in the case, it remains to be seen whether she would agree to testify against Brown. The couple reportedly reconciled in the last week, having spent time together last weekend at the Star Island mansion of Sean "Diddy" Combs.

"The prosecution is very familiar with continuing to prosecute domestic violence cases when the complaining witness changes her mind and doesn't want to testify — they have often in past years sent people to jail or been willing to send people to jail if they refuse to testify," Goldman explained to Radar. "It's just the way the law is constructed. Now there's a real question as to whether they can do that to her."

Michael Jackson Announces London Concert Dates

By Chloe Bunker on March 5, 2009

LONDON — Michael Jackson finally revealed plans for his long-awaited comeback Thursday, announcing that he'll perform several dates this summer at London's O2 Arena.

The 50-year-old singer said he will play 10 dates at the venue, beginning on July 8. He made the announcement in front of hundreds of adoring fans as he stood on a makeshift stage at the Arena, according to Reuters.

Jackson said the shows would be his "final curtain call" in the city.

"Thank you all...this is it," he said, according to Reuters. "These will be my final shows ... performances in London. When I say this is it, I mean this is it. I'll be performing the songs my fans want to hear. This is it, this is really it, this is the final curtain call."

Jackson's promoter, AEG Live, said the run could be extended if demand exists. The company said it has a three-and-a-half-year deal in place to work with the "King of Pop."

Once the biggest star in the music business, Jackson has been plagued by financial, legal, and medical woes for years. The "Beat It" singer has not performed a major concert since 2001, the same year that his last studio album was released.

Chris Brown Charged with Two Felonies in Alleged Rihanna Assault

By Rich King on March 5, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown was charged with two felonies Thursday stemming from last month's alleged assault of his girlfriend, fellow R&B star Rihanna, The Associated Press reports.

Brown, 19, is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon on charges of assault and making criminal threats, AP said.

If convicted, Brown faces anywhere from probation to a maximum four years and eight months in state prison, DA spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said.

Thursday was the first time authorities have released the name of the victim, identified as "Robyn F." The "Umbrella" singer's real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty.

The formal charges come nearly a month after the couple got into a fight while driving in the early morning hours of Feb. 8. According to a detective's affidavit obtained by AP, the argument began after Rihanna found a text message from another woman on Brown's cell phone.

As the fight ensued, Brown pulled the car over and attempted to push Rihanna out of the vehicle, but she was wearing a seatbelt at the time. He then pushed the singer's head against the car window and punched her before continuing to drive and hit her. Brown also alleged bit Rihanna on the ear, the affidavit said.

At one point, Rihanna made a fake phone call to her assistant, asking her to have the police waiting once she arrived. The phony message reportedly led to Brown making an alleged threat to kill Rihanna.

Brown turned himself into authorities later that evening. He was arrested and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats and later released on $50,000 bail.

The incident took place on the day of the Grammy Awards, in which both stars were scheduled to perform. Both singers cancelled their appearances.

Brown has only spoken out once publicly since the incident, releasing a statement that expressed his remorse.

"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired," said the "Kiss Kiss" singer. "I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person."

The couple has reportedly reconciled in the last week, having spent time together last weekend at the Star Island mansion of Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Reese Witherspoon Says Ryan Phillippe Divorce Was 'Very Humiliating'

By Chloe Bunker on March 4, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Reese Witherspoon hit a low point when she split with Ryan Phillippe in 2006, a divorce that was both "very humiliating and very isolating" in her eyes. But the actress says it was the right way to feel at the time.

"If it's not painful, maybe it wasn't the right decision to marry to begin with," the 32-year-old star reasons in the April issue of Elle. "Those are the appropriate emotions."

The "Walk the Line" star says things went from bad to worse as her friends and family tried to pick her back up from the divorce.

"When people get in your face and say, 'This will pass,' you think: Are they crazy?" she explains to the mag. "I'm never gonna feel any better than I feel right this minute and nothing's ever gonna make sense again. And I still have moments where I'm like, 'Nothing's ever gonna make sense again.' "

Witherspoon and Phillippe married in 1999 and have two children together, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4. After her marriage tumbled, Witherspoon said she looked at herself in the mirror to find answers.

"You see a lot of people play this blame game. Blame, blame, blame. You know? And it's a really easy thing to do, and I'm certainly guilty of it," she tells Elle. [You have to] look at yourself and go, 'What part of this do I need to own? Which part of this is my responsibility? And that's the painful work that you have to go through to hopefully get some real life knowledge out of it."

As for her current beau, actor Jake Gyllenhaal, Witherspoon says she couldn't be happier.

"He's fabulous," she says. "He really is a fantastic guy."
