NEW YORK — Susan Boyle has sparked new fears about her ability to handle fame after suffering an apparent breakdown following her performance on Wednesday's Today Show.

According to Britain's Daily Mail, the Scottish singing sensation became emotional during a lunch with her fans at New York's Rockefeller Center. Boyle reportedly started sobbing and sucking her thumb after the group presented her with a patchwork quilt that had been knit together by hundreds of fans from 28 countries.

Within minutes, the 48-year-old singer managed to regroup and perform a lively dance for her followers.

"She was just overjoyed and extremely touched with the reception she had had from everyone in America," Boyle's rep explained of the incident.

Boyle rose to stardom overnight with her April performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" on Britain's Got Talent. Shortly after finishing second on the show, she checked into a rehab center when her sudden fame led to a breakdown.

Boyle's debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, has experienced record sales in both the U.K. and U.S. since being released earlier this week.
