LOS ANGELES — Heidi Montag may be inching closer to seeking a divorce from Spencer Pratt.
On Tuesday, Montag filed for a legal separation from her husband at the Santa Monica Courthouse, TMZ reports.
Montag, who did not file for a divorce, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the separation. The filing allows the reality starlet to maintain her earnings as separate property moving forward.
In May, the 23-year-old Montag moved out of the couple's home in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
"I needed some alone time," she explained last week to People. "There are so many lies out there about me and I just needed space – even away from my husband."
"I had to get away from the lies my family and supposed friends are saying about me," added Montag. "It's time to concentrate on myself."
The reality pair tied the knot in April 2009 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, Calif.

LOS ANGELES — The production company behind NBC's "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" have shot back at claims that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were "tortured" during shooting.
On Sunday, TMZ reported that Montag was diagnosed with a gastric ulcer after being hospitalized Saturday while filming the summer reality series in Costa Rica. The illness came about after she and her husband were locked away in a dark room — a punishment for leaving the show earlier in the week. One cast member compared their lockdown to Guantanamo Bay, but ITV, the production shop behind the show, denied any wrongdoing.
"ITV Studios, producers of the series, state that press reports at this time are untrue," a rep for the production company told Access Hollywood in a statement. "ITV has been producing this format around the world for many years and the health of the celebrity participants are of the utmost importance. A medic and a doctor are present at the location at all times for all participants. All allegations of the celebrities being deprived of food and water are completely untrue."
Shortly after Montag was hospitalized, her sister-in-law, Stephanie Pratt, condemned NBC.
"I'm really saddened to hear that nbc felt it was ok to punish speidi so harshly-and torture them as if they were criminals-that Heidi was...rushed to the hospital and has an IV in her arm after being locked in a dark room for 3 days w no food or water. Pls pray she will be ok," she wrote on her Twitter page.
"Her family is flying out to see her in the hospital. I know they pulled some sh--ty antics-but really nbc?? Too far," she added.
A source denied that the pair was locked away for three days, telling Access that they actually spent only one night in the "Lost Chamber."
"The footage will show the Pratts to be liars," said the insider.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt Married Once Again
PASADENA, Calif. — Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are officially husband and wife.
The reality TV couple tied the knot Saturday afternoon at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, Calif., an MTV rep confirmed to Access Hollywood.
"MTV wishes Heidi and Spencer the best and can't wait to share their wedding with 'The Hills' fans later this season," said the network spokesperson.
Montag, 22, and Pratt, 25, exchanged vows in front of 200 friends and family, including fellow "Hills" stars Lauren Conrad, Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner and Stephanie Montag.
Many had speculated whether on-again, off-again friend Conrad would attend the ceremony. As it turned out, she not only attended, but ended up catching the wedding bouquet, Access reported.
"You're next!" shouted Montag after the catch.
Prior to the ceremony, an airplane soared overhead and wrote "Spencer loves Heidi" in the sky.
As she prepared for her big day, Montag managed to keep her fans updated by posting several messages on Twitter, including "This is going to be the best day of my life." She also wrote "Thank you God for Spencer" and described her wedding dress as "amazing – like a swan princess."
On Friday night, approximately 40 guests joined the couple in Beverly Hills for the rehearsal dinner at the Wolfgang Puck restaurant Cut.
Saturday's affair was the second wedding for the pair, who eloped last November at the One & Only Palmilla Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
