NEW YORK – Preliminary figures show Wednesday's finale of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scored its highest audience in 17 years.
The Nielsen Co. said Thursday that the final show delivered a 13.3 household rating in the nation's metered markets.
It was the highest number since February 1994. That's when an "Oprah" episode called "People Shed Their Disguises" got a 13.4 rating.

NEW YORK – While many reacted to the final episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" with tears and emotion, comedians found punch lines.
On "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Kimmel sang goodbye by performing the song "End of the Road" with R&B group Boyz II Men.
David Letterman, whose up-and-down relationship with Winfrey has long been chronicled, earlier lamented not being invited to the farewell gala in Chicago.

CHICAGO – There were no free cars or vacations. No favorite things or makeovers. No celebrity guests on stage - though there were plenty in the audience.
The finale of Oprah Winfrey's talk show, taped Tuesday and aired Wednesday, was all about the one thing that made her a billion-dollar success: the unique connection she made with millions of viewers for 25 years. In what she called her "love letter" to fans, she made clear that to her, all those TV friendships went both ways.

CHICAGO – Oprah Winfrey ended her famous talk show Wednesday by telling her viewers of 25 years that they weren't saying goodbye.
"I won't say goodbye, I'll just say until we meet again," Winfrey said.
She hugged and kissed her longtime partner Stedman Graham and shook hands with audience members before walking through the halls of Harpo Studios in Chicago, hugging and crying with her staff.

CHICAGO – In the end, it was just Oprah.
For the final episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" taped Tuesday, the talk show queen appeared alone on her Chicago stage, talking to viewers about what they've meant to her during the show's 25-year run. The finale will air on Wednesday.
Fans leaving Tuesday's taping said Winfrey had tears in her eyes as the television icon said a final thank you.

CHICAGO – Hundreds of giddy fans struck by their luck at getting tickets to be a part of history gathered outside Oprah Winfrey's television studio in Chicago Tuesday awaiting the taping of her final talk show.
The show being taped Tuesday afternoon will be the finale of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," according to Harpo Productions. The show will air on Wednesday.

NEW YORK — The sun will come out on Thursday. Bet your bottom dollar.
Moreover, the Earth will almost certainly still be spinning on its axis.
Even in Chicago, the city Oprah Winfrey is abandoning, life is pretty sure to continue as normal. Expect the pizza to be as tasty and the gusts off Lake Michigan to be as persistent on Thursday as they were the day before.
This is not to say change isn't in the wind.

CHICAGO – Aretha Franklin sang "Amazing Grace" to Oprah Winfrey during the talk show queen's farewell show.
The music legend came onstage in a white, one-shouldered gown for her performance. She was introduced by Winfrey's longtime partner, Stedman Graham. Franklin was one of several musical acts at Tuesday night's "Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular" at Chicago's United Center.

CHICAGO – Maria Shriver has appeared at Oprah Winfrey's farewell show in Chicago, the same day it was revealed her husband Arnold Schwarzenegger fathered a child with another woman.
Shriver came on stage at the United Center with Winfrey's best friend, Gayle King. Shriver told Winfrey that the talk show host has "given me love, support, wisdom and most of all the truth." Shriver said she knew she wasn't "alone in receiving those gifts."
