Patti LaBelle Files Countersuit in Beating Case

HOUSTON – Veteran R&B diva Patti LaBelle says in a countersuit filed against a West Point cadet who claims she ordered her bodyguards to beat him up outside a Houston airport terminal that the altercation began after the cadet hurled racial insults at her.
But an attorney for the cadet, Richard King, denied his client ever said any racial slurs to LaBelle.
Lady Gaga Sued Over Fundraising Effort for Japan

DETROIT – Lady Gaga's spokeswoman says a lawsuit accusing the music star of misleading fans with an online pitch for donations to victims of the Japan earthquake is meritless.
Lady Gaga's website is selling $5 wristbands that say, "We Pray For Japan." The website also allows people to make additional donations and says "all proceeds go directly to Japan relief efforts."

Singer Paulina Rubio Arrested in Miami After Car Crash

MIAMI – Mexican pop singer Paulina Rubio is charged in Miami with refusing to comply with police officers after a traffic accident.
According to an arrest report, Rubio's BMW collided with another car Saturday near Miami's Little Havana.
When asked to get out of her car, Rubio allegedly refused, cursed at an officer and said she was nervous and that "all of you Miami cops are abusive."

Fans Toast Michael Jackson on 2nd Anniversary of His Death

GARY, Ind. – Hundreds of Michael Jackson fans have marked the two-year anniversary of the singer's death by gathering for a memorial outside the Gary home where Jackson grew up.
The Times of Munster reports that revelers swayed to Jackson's songs during Saturday night's tribute. Poets, local singers and dancers also entertained the crowd. Mayor Rudy Clay welcomed visitors to the event and proclaimed the city will not stop celebrating Jackson's memory.
Chris Brown Wins Big at BET Awards

LOS ANGELES – Amid awards for the top artists, actors and athletes, Steve Harvey was recognized for his humanitarian work at the BET Awards.
BET Chairman and Chief Executive Debra Lee called the 54-year-old entertainer "a true gentleman who acts like a comedian but thinks like a citizen of the world" as she presented him with the Humanitarian Award.
Harvey thanked God and his fellow philanthropists as he accepted the honor.
Michael Jackson 'Thriller' Jacket Fetches $1.8M

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – A famed black-and-red calfskin jacket that Michael Jackson wore in the classic "Thriller" video has sold at auction for $1.8 million.
Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, says the jacket was purchased Sunday by Milton Verret, a commodities trader from Austin, Texas.
Chris Brown, Lil Wayne Lead BET Awards Nominees

LOS ANGELES – Chris Brown will have another chance at redemption when the BET Awards are presented Sunday night.
The 21-year-old singer, whose image is still recovering from his attack on Rihanna more than two years ago, is up for a leading six awards, including best male R&B artist and video of the year.
Brown scored several hits with his latest album, F.A.M.E., but suffered a reputation setback in March when he smashed up his dressing room after an appearance on "Good Morning America."
U2 Hit by 'Tax Dodge' Protest at Glastonbury Music Festival

LONDON – U2 and its frontman Bono, known for their global poverty-fighting efforts, were accused of dodging taxes in Ireland by activists who crashed their performance Friday at England's Glastonbury festival.
The anti-capitalist group Art Uncut inflated a 20-foot (6-meter) balloon emblazoned with the message "U Pay Your Tax 2." Security guards wrestled them to the ground before deflating the balloon and taking it away. About 30 people were involved in the angry clash.
