Screen Legend Dennis Hopper Dead at 74

LOS ANGELES — Dennis Hopper, the Hollywood icon whose career included the 1969 film classic Easy Rider, has died. He was 74.

The screen legend, who had been battling prostate cancer, died Saturday morning at his Venice home, surrounded by friends and family, family friend Alex Hitz told the Associated Press.

During his distinguished career, Hopper received Oscar nominations for both Easy Rider (which he also directed and co-wrote) and Hoosiers. Other notable movie credits include Rebel Without a Cause, Apocalypse Now and Blue Velvet.

Easy Rider was never a motorcycle movie to me," he said in 2009. "A lot of it was about politically what was going on in the country."

The 73-year-old actor cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The date of the divorce filing, which took place in Los Angeles, was not revealed.

The couple, who tied the knot in April 1996, have one child together, a 6-year-old daughter named Galen.

Dennis Hopper Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

LOS ANGELES — Dennis Hopper is taking a break from his career after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The 73-year-old actor is currently seeking treatment under a special program at the University of Southern California, his manager, Sam Maydew, told the Associated Press.

"We're hoping for the best," Maydew said of the prognosis.

Hopper's cancer treatment forced him to cancel an appearance at "Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood," an exhibition of his photography taking place at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

NEW YORK — Dennis Hopper has been released from a New York hospital after being rushed to the emergency room Wednesday with a stomach ailment.

The 73-year-old actor's manager tells People that Hopper is "now back in his hotel room and feeling much better."

Hopper fell ill while he was in the city to promote his new Starz television series "Crash," based on the 2004 Oscar-winning film of the same name. The veteran star was forced to cancel several interviews and appearances, including a visit to "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

"Dennis would like to thank everyone for their will wishes, and he looks forward to getting back to work on 'Crash,'" his manager said.

Dennis Hopper Rushed to Hospital

NEW YORK — Dennis Hopper was rushed to a New York City hospital Wednesday with stomach pains, the Associated Press reports.

The 73-year-old actor was complaining of pain often associated with the flu, his rep said.

Hopper was wearing an oxygen mask when he was wheeled into the unidentified hospital, sources told Entertainment Tonight.

The veteran star had arrived in town to publicize his new Starz television series "Crash," based on the 2004 Oscar-winning film of the same name. His hospitalization led to several interviews and appearances needing to be canceled, including visits to the "Today Show" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Dennis Hopper has joined the growing cast for the upcoming Starz series based on the Oscar-winning film "Crash."

Hopper, 72, will play a veteran maverick music producer looking for his last big score, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He most recently starred in the NBC series "E-Ring."
