TAMPA, Fla. — Carolina's Dante Wesley delivered a devastating hit on Tampa Bay's Clifton Smith Sunday, resulting in the Panthers safety and special teams standout being ejected from the game.
The hit took place late in the second quarter as Wesley delivered the crushing blow as Smith was awaiting a punt. The Bucs returner was knocked unconscious for nearly a minute and never returned back to the game after the hit.
A video replay shows Wesley driving his shoulder and elbow into Smith's head.
"I was just trying to make a play," Wesley told reporters after the Panthers escaped with a 28-21 win. "You can check my record. .... I've never really tried to hurt anybody. I've never tried to take a cheap shot on anybody."
