NEW ORLEANS – In 1995, Essence Communications Inc. celebrated its magazine's 25th anniversary with a party in New Orleans.
Thousands showed up to applaud the magazine and the best of black musical talent and culture.
Seventeen years later that experience - proposed as a one-time "party with a purpose" - has morphed into the Essence Music Festival.

NEW YORK – After resting her voice, Adele is ready to sing again.
The best-selling singer-songwriter from Great Britain was forced to cancel the rest of the dates on her North American tour earlier this month because of laryngitis. Now she has rescheduled those dates and added some shows in Las Vegas, Miami and other cities.

LONDON – Troubled diva Amy Winehouse has canceled the rest of her European summer concert tour and scrapped all public performances after an embarrassing appearance in Serbia, her spokesman said Tuesday.
Chris Goodman said Winehouse, who has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, "is withdrawing from all scheduled performances" to focus on recovering.

The five-time Grammy Award winner, whose battles with alcohol and drug abuse have long overshadowed her music career, had a very public meltdown on stage Saturday night in Belgrade, the first stop of her European summer concert tour.

LONDON – Amy Winehouse canceled part of her European tour on Sunday, a day after the British singer was heavily booed for being late and displaying erratic behavior on stage during a concert in Serbia.
The concert late Saturday in the Serbian capital of Belgrade kicked off what was to be a 12-date tour of Europe. But Winehouse decided to cancel appearances in Istanbul on Monday and in Athens on Wednesday, according to a statement from publicity company Outside Organization.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Turns out Keith Urban's 2011 Get Closer Tour is aptly named.
The country superstar will unveil a new stage design when his tour starts Thursday in Biloxi, Miss. Urban often tucks away ideas he comes up with while standing on stage in front of thousands of fans. He noticed on his last tour that when he descended ramps at each end of the stage, nearby fans were practically in the concert.
So he built a curved stage with a continuous ramp from side to side, erasing the barrier.

DETROIT – Kid Rock has added a second hometown concert at Detroit's baseball park this summer.
The hit-making rocker on Thursday announced plans for the Aug. 13 show at Comerica Park with opening act Sammy Hagar and the Wabos. He earlier had announced plans for an Aug. 12 show with the same opening act.
Tickets for both shows go on sale Saturday.

NEW YORK – A scheduled Black Eyed Peas benefit concert in Central Park has been canceled due to severe thunderstorms.
The concert, which was expected to draw up to 60,000 spectators to the park's Great Lawn, was originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, but was delayed an hour and then canceled all together because of the weather.
The concert to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation was also to feature appearances by Natasha Bedingfield, LL Cool J, Carole King, MC Hammer, and Debbie Harry.

NEW YORK – British singer Adele has postponed five dates on her tour of North America due to laryngitis.
Columbia Records said in a statement Monday the 23-year-old Grammy winner was diagnosed last Thursday in Minneapolis, where doctors ordered immediate rest. Her show was canceled and rescheduled for June 22.
She performed in Denver on Saturday, but her show in Salt Lake City on Sunday was canceled at the last minute "when her illness worsened."
The tour will resume June 4 in San Francisco.

LOS ANGELES – Coachella festival organizers are doubling the annual music extravaganza.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival organizers say next year's festival will be held in Indio, Calif., over two weekends on April 13 to 15 and April 20 to 22.
The separate events are expected to feature the "same lineup, same art, same place, different people."
