The Colombia-born editor Nina Garcia, known for her role as creative director of Marie Claire magazine and as a judge on the popular series Project Runway, has been named the new editor-in-chief of Elle magazine.
“Nina is the ultimate Elle woman — her life is incredibly full, she’s curious about everything and she’s passionate about fashion, beauty, technology, art, travel, the environment, women’s issues and the ways that they all intersect,” said Hearst Magazines Chief Content Officer Joanna Coles in an official statement. “She understands the multi-platform world and embraced it early on, becoming one of fashion’s first social media influencers with the largest following of any editor-in-chief. Nina is a force of personality, and she’ll bring her energy, her unique sensibility and style to Elle, a brand she knows so well.”
Garcia, who served as creative director of Marie Claire since 2012 and their fashion director from 2008 to 2012, has published four books about fashion. According to the New York Times, Garcia will be responsible for strengthening the brand’s identity and will continue to celebrate the diversity and voices of emerging talent. It is expected that her first issue as editor-in-chief will be either February or March of 2018; her first day is set to start on September 18.
Immediately following the announcement, Garcia took to social media to share her excitement in Spanish: “Today is a very special day for me. Happy to announce my return to @ELLEmagazine where I will be editor in chief,” she tweeted in Spanish. From 2000 to 2008, she worked as Elle‘s fashion director.
