Selena Gomez has landed yet another big time movie role, this time alongside former Spring Breakers co-star and man-friend to all, James Franco!
Gomez, who is currently shooting Fundamentals of Caregiving (co-starring Paul Rudd), will share the big screen with Franco in In Dubious Battle. Franco is also directing the film, and has assembled an all-star cast including Gomez, Vincent D’Onofrio,Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston and Danny McBride.
Based upon Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Steinbeck‘s book of the same name (published in 1936), In Dubious Battle is the story of a man attempting to organize a major strike by fruit pickers in the Southern California Valley.
The press release states:
Set in a fictionalized valley in California, the story explores themes Steinbeck continued to develop: group behavior, social injustice, man’s inhumanity to man— all themes which continue to be relevant today.
A labor conflict between migrant apple pickers and the local growers’ association is the backdrop against which Jim Nolan (Franco) becomes involved in the labor movement and rapidly matures as he learns what it means to do organizational fieldwork.
This is not the first time James has taken part in an adaption of a John Steinbeck story; the actor recently made his Broadway debut in a revival of Of Mice and Men.
As previously mentioned, Gomez co-starred in Spring Breakers with the actor-turned-director.
In March 2013, the 22-year-old singer-turned-actress confessed to David Letterman that during the shooting of their movie, James (who played a drug dealing gangster with cornrows) freaked her out!
“He stayed in character the whole time [we filmed] and luckily for me, my character was creeped out by him, because I genuinely was at first. We shot the movie for four weeks, then he came in and walked on set as his character and freaked me out.
That’s who I knew, until we started doing press and I realized he’s one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met.”
