Channing Tatum, 2012′s “Sexiest Man Alive” as chosen by People magazine, is in exceptionally good company.
The 32-year-old joins the ranks of some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including his Magic Mike co-star Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise and Jude Law.
And then there are the record holders: two-time winners George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp.
In honor of Tatum’s newest title, Celebuzz is taking a look back at People’s roster of Sexiest Men Alive, dating back to its first winner in 1985, when the publication chose Mel Gibson as the sexiest of them all.
Over the years, the magazine has made some surprising choices for its annual title (Nick Nolte in 1992), while spreading its demographic (Sean Connery, who received the honor at 59 years old in 1989) and teasing Ryan Gosling fans since the actor made his mark with The Notebook some years back. Despite protest from his fans, Gosling still hasn’t been christened “sexiest” by People.
In 1993, the magazine temporarily replaced its “Sexiest Man Alive” award with the “Sexiest Couple Alive,” crowning then-lovebirds Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere.
To date, the youngest winner remains the late John F. Kennedy, Jr., who was crowned sexiest at 27 years old in 1988.
