Anne Hathaway took a bit of time off over the last year after realizing that the world of fame was crashing down on her… Hard.
In the October edition of Elle UK, the 31-year-old–who sizzles on the cover in a sleek Emporio Armani tux and deep red lips–opens up about her struggle in her rise to the top of Tinsel Town.
“This fame thing? It fucked me up for a really long time,” she admits. “I didn’t know how to do it; I didn’t know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, ‘You just have to be yourself,’ and I was like, ‘But I don’t know who that is yet!’”
So following her Oscar win for Les Mis in 2013, she decided to take some time away from the spotlight and truly indulge in herself.
“The thing I’ve learned this past year is to chill out. I think when you’re young and struggling to find yourself, there’s something alluring about the idea of being tortured,” she says, adding, “Life for me these days is a lot about letting the unknown be wonderful, and letting myself feel safe.”
She continues, “I’ve realized that I don’t need validation from anybody… At all. I’m not sitting here now worrying, ‘What do you think of me?’ With all due respect, you seem like a lovely lady, but I don’t need you, or anyone else, to like me. And that’s so liberating. It’s a big reveal, man.”
And now she’s back and better than ever, showing off her newly acquired confidence while promoting her latest role opposite Matthew McConaughey in the sci-fi flick Interstellar, which will hit theaters Nov. 7.
